As Caracol Trading Co. launches, it's only fitting that you get a little peek behind the curtain. I'm Gina, and Caracol is the manifestation of a long-held dream of mine. I grew up in a household that hosted a rotating cast of international visitors, students and apprentices, so the travel bug bit early (and hard). Textiles came into the picture on my honeymoon in Turkey, where I picked up the first pieces of a collection that would grow to demand quite a bit of space in my household. That was all it took to make the hunt for textiles and handmade crafts a central mission of every subsequent trip I've taken.
My enthusiasm—some might call it an obsession—led to countless hours of careful study, far-flung travels, learning from experts and developing an eye for fine examples of textiles from locations all across the globe. For a long time, I entertained dreams of starting my own business, offering the beautiful things we scouted in markets, bazaars and souks the world over—but I left it in my imagination. After a decade, I still hadn't shaken the impulse. In early 2016, I decided it was high time to listen to my inner voice and now Caracol Trading Co. is coming to life.
We'll be offering goods in pop-up shopping experiences, as well as making select items available online. Here, in the Caracol Trading Co. journal, you can look forward to travel guides and tips, deep dives into global textiles and explorations of culture, food, design and more.
I hope you'll join me!
